The Realist Hub was thrilled to have had Suzanne Van Hees host a seminar discussing the protocol and results of a literature realist review on ‘stay at work’ and ‘work performance’ for working with common mental health problems.
This presentation is based on the chapter Dr Sam Redgate and Sonia Dalkin co-wrote “The Realist Topic Guide” in Realist Evaluation (Manzano & Williams, 2024), explores how topic guides can support the practical application of realist principles within the field, when collecting qualitative data. We will unpack key conceptual foundations of realist topic guides. Building on this, we introduce a stepped approach to developing realist topic guides, offering practical, flexible strategies to embed realist thinking in the field.
Alejandro Arguelles Bullon and Mita Huq join The Realist Hub to share a step-by-step, worked example from a recent project on integrated mental health care for refugees in Canada. Their approach combines the strengths of the linked coding method of Jackson & Kolla with realist thematic analysis by Wiltshire & Ronkainen to connect data, context–mechanism–outcome configurations, and theory building. Attendees will see exactly how codes become realist themes, how realist themes inform candidate mechanisms, and how these are iteratively refined into a clear IPT, offering a practical alternative for teams developing theories from qualitative data.
The Realist Hub welcomed Nienke de Graef, Dr Rowan Smeets and Dr Dorijn Hertroijs to host a workshop in October. This workshop had 2 aims: To raise awareness and understanding of Realist Evaluation and its application in integrated care. To inspire and equip participants with practical tools for conducting Realist Evaluation in co-creating with stakeholders. Using “The Hats of Bono”, the participants practiced realist thinking and explore ways to collaborate with stakeholders. The workshop applied four hats to elicit feelings, ideas, benefits, and critiques around realist statements from real-life care.
